Identifies a possible risk factor for cardiovascular disease by looking for an elevated level of lipoprotein. Lipoprotein(a) is often ordered with additional lipid tests if an individual is considered to be at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Patient Preparation: Intake of alcohol, aspirin, niacin, and estrogen supplements have the potential of causing a misrepresentation of true Lp(a) concentrations.
